  • Air Force Captain Ted Harduvel (Vincent Spano) was one of the best fighter pilots a country could hope for. Loyal, hardworking, eagle-eyed, he knew enough to rely on the instruments in his plane to guide him safely home. Which is why, when he died in a plane crash in Korea, his wife Janet (Academy Award Nominee -- Best Actress 1991; Laura Dern) was astounded to discover that the Air Force had blam
RAMBLING ROSE - DVD MovieThis overrated period comic-drama, set in Georgia in the 1930s, featured the first mother-daughter team to be nominated for acting Oscars in the same year. Laura Dern plays a free-wheeling young woman who is taken in as a domestic by an upper-class family, headed by Robert Duvall and Diane Ladd (Dern's real-life mother). Rose, who tends to let her sexual urges get the best of her, scandalizes everyone in three counties (including Duvall and Lukas Haas, who plays his son) wit! h her willing spirit. Do those kind of loose morals warrant court-ordered sterilization? Or does this young woman just need a guiding hand? While many fell for this cornpone shtick, directed by Martha Coolidge, it's a hard movie to cozy up to because Rose is such a caricature and the rest of the characters (with the exception of the always exceptional Duvall) are such sticks. --Marshall Fine Fifteen-year-old Connie Wyatt (Laura Dern) may be too young to drive, but she's already driving the boys crazy. Her suspicious mother (Mary Kay Place) wants to keep her safely at home, but free-spirited Connie would rather while away the languid summer days hanging out with her friends and flirting with boys at the local burger stand. But when she flirts with an older, handsome and predatory stranger (Treat Williams), she isn't prepared for the frightening and traumatic consequences. This overrated period comic-drama, set in Georgia in the 1930s, featured the first mot! her-daughter team to be nominated for acting Oscars in the sam! e year. Featuring the "formidable per! formances" (Leonard Maltin) of Nicolas Cage, Laura Dern, Willem Dafoe, Crispin Glover and Diane Ladd, Wild at Heart is a twisted "rollercoaster ride to redemption through an American gothic heart of darkness" (Variety). If Lula (Dern) knows one thing in this world, itÂ's that sheÂ's destined to be with her ex-con boyfriend Sailor (Cage) Ââ€" no matter how many times her mama tries to kill him. But when she and Sailor finally hit the road in a desperate bid to find happiness, their journey plunges them into a disturbing underworld filled with sexual secrets and dangerous desires that form a terrifying "tapestry of human extremity" (Variety).David Lynch's 1990 Wild at Heart is an utterly random and ugly experience with pockets of startling imagery and inspired set pieces. Based on a Barry Gifford novel, the film stars Nicolas Cage and Laura Dern as lovers on the lam whose relationship is tested and who meet some truly dangerous wackos (including an almost-simian W! illem Dafoe). Lynch's thoughts seem to be everywhere, and he e! xpects t he audience to keep up with a story that seems more a collection of avant-garde whims than a coherent vision with the intuitive brilliance of his Blue Velvet. Cage gives one of his more chaotic performances, but then he was just reading Lynch's signposts. --Tom KeoghTHE WIDOW OF AN AIR FORCE PILOT KILLED IN A PLANE CRASH REFUSES TO ACCEPT THE OFFICIAL EXPLANATION OF HER HUSBANDS DEATH.
